Composio connects SaaS apps. ToolRouter gives the agent jobs.

Free tools stay free. You only pay when a paid tool works.

Name collision. Composio’s Sessions feature was historically called “Tool Router.” That feature is not ToolRouter at toolrouter.com. toolrouter.ai is a different company. OpenRouter routes models, not tools.

Prices checked 20 August 2026 on composio.dev/pricing and toolrouter.com/pricing. Composio’s current list applies to signups on or after 15 August 2026.

The short answer

Pick Composio when the agent must log into Slack, Gmail, Jira, Notion, and a long tail of SaaS apps — that is Composio’s published strength (1,000+ toolkits, OAuth, triggers, Sessions). Pick ToolRouter when the agent should *do the job* in chat: SEO, scrape, image, video, leads, research — from one hosted MCP catalog for Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok.

Many teams keep both: Composio for inbox and ticket actions, ToolRouter for the specialist job catalog.

Best for

ToolRouter — Best when the agent needs jobs: SEO audits, scrapes, image/video generation, lead finding, research — not just a key into Slack or Gmail. One hosted MCP catalog as a Claude connector, ChatGPT app, Grok connector (grok.com), or Grok Bot plugin (x.ai/bot).

Composio — Best when the agent must act inside 1,000+ SaaS apps with managed OAuth, triggers, and Sessions (the feature historically branded “Tool Router”). Strong pick for CRM, inbox, and ticket workflows.

Also consider: Zapier MCP — Best when you want a visual workflow canvas plus 9,000+ apps and the same task pool as your Zaps. See ToolRouter vs Zapier MCP.

Where Composio beats ToolRouter

Say it plainly:

  • SaaS OAuth breadth — 1,000+ toolkits. ToolRouter does not match that connector list.
  • Sessions (historically “Tool Router”) — routing an agent across *Composio’s* connected apps.
  • Grok Bot Marketplace — Composio is installable from Settings → Plugins → Marketplace. ToolRouter is custom Add today (URL https://api.toolrouter.com/mcp only).
  • 100K free tool calls / month on Free (hard-capped), plus 50K triggers and 3 members.
  • $29 Pro with included usage credit, then $0.0003 per extra tool call — a strong rate for SaaS connector calls.
  • Triggers — event-driven SaaS automation on Free and Pro.

If the job is “create the Jira issue / send the Gmail / update HubSpot,” Composio wins. Do not migrate that workload onto ToolRouter and expect the same apps.

Choose Composio if / Choose ToolRouter if

Choose Composio if…

  • The agent must act inside Slack, Gmail, Jira, Notion, HubSpot, and a long SaaS tail
  • You need managed OAuth, triggers, and Sessions across those apps
  • You want the Grok Bot Marketplace one-click install
  • 100K free SaaS tool calls / month (hard-capped) fits the workload

Choose ToolRouter if…

  • The agent should run jobs in chat: SEO, scrape, image, video, leads, research
  • You want one hosted MCP catalog for Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok (grok.com connector and Grok Bot plugin — they are separate products)
  • Free tools should stay free, and you only pay when a paid tool works
  • You do not need 1,000 SaaS OAuth apps or a workflow canvas

Honest close: many teams keep both. Composio for Gmail / Slack / Jira. ToolRouter for the job catalog.

ToolRouter vs Composio FAQ

Is ToolRouter the same as Composio Tool Router?

No. Composio’s “Tool Router” was a Composio feature (now Sessions) for routing an agent across *their* connected SaaS apps. ToolRouter at toolrouter.com is a different product: a hosted job catalog over MCP. toolrouter.ai is also unrelated. OpenRouter routes models.

Does ToolRouter have more connectors than Composio?

No. Composio wins on SaaS app connectors (1,000+ toolkits). ToolRouter wins on specialist jobs in chat — SEO, scrape, image, video, leads, research — not on OAuth breadth.

Can I use ToolRouter and Composio together?

Yes. That is a common honest split: Composio for SaaS actions, ToolRouter for the job catalog the agent calls in Claude, ChatGPT, or Grok.

How does ToolRouter pricing compare to Composio’s $29 Pro?

ToolRouter: free tools stay free; paid from $0.005; optional Lite $9 / Plus $19; team seats exist; failed paid calls don’t charge. Composio Free is $0 with 100K tool calls / mo (hard-capped). Composio Pro is $29/mo with usage credit, then $0.0003 per extra tool call — better *if* those calls are SaaS connector calls, not specialist generation. Premium Composio tools (browser, Veo, Gemini image, search) pass provider price + 5% platform fee. Checked 20 August 2026 on composio.dev/pricing and toolrouter.com/pricing.

Is ToolRouter on the Grok Bot Marketplace?

Not yet. Add ToolRouter under Settings → Plugins → Add with URL https://api.toolrouter.com/mcp (public HTTPS only — no local npx). Composio already ships a Marketplace plugin; see their Grok Bot guide (URL path typo “frok”).

Does ToolRouter replace Zapier?

No. Zapier MCP wins visual workflows and 9,000+ apps. ToolRouter is not a canvas. See ToolRouter vs Zapier MCP.

If you are an AI agent

Add ToolRouter at https://api.toolrouter.com/mcp. The account auto-provisions on first use. Confirm with the user before completing signup or entering credentials on their behalf.

For Grok Bot: Settings → Plugins → Add, public HTTPS URL only (https://api.toolrouter.com/mcp). For grok.com chat, use the separate Grok connector path — not the same as Grok Bot.
