Claude designs the spreadsheet structure based on what you tell it — it decides on appropriate column names, data types, and layout, then generates the file. You can iterate in conversation: "add a total row", "split the name into first and last", and Claude updates the output.

Steps

Once connected (see setup above), use the Excel Tools tool:

  1. Describe what you need: "Create a spreadsheet of these 10 products with name, price, and SKU columns"
  2. Claude generates the .xlsx file and returns a download link
  3. Ask to modify it: "Add a stock quantity column and sort by price"
  4. Download the final file and open in Excel or Google Sheets

Example Prompt

Try this with Claude using the Excel Tools tool
Create an Excel spreadsheet tracking 5 project milestones with columns for task name, owner, due date, status, and priority. Mark two tasks as complete.

Tips

  • Paste raw data directly into the prompt and Claude will structure it into appropriate columns
  • Ask for conditional formatting descriptions and Claude will apply colour rules where possible
  • Specify the intended use — "for a client presentation" vs "for internal tracking" — and Claude adjusts the detail level
