Record Collector

Determine the exact pressing of a record using catalog numbers, matrix codes, label variations, and other physical clues. Use `identify_pressing`, `edition_match`, and `release_details` to narrow down the possibilities. Claude is strong at weighing ambiguous clues, explaining which identifiers are decisive, and telling you what to look for next if the first pass is inconclusive.

Steps

Once connected (see setup above), use the Record Collector tool:

  1. Gather every physical clue you can find: catalog number, matrix or runout text, label design, pressing plant codes, barcode, country of origin, and any text on the spine or inner sleeve.
  2. Use `record-collector` to run `identify_pressing` with your clues, then `edition_match` to narrow the candidates, and `release_details` to confirm the match.
  3. Ask Claude to explain which clue was decisive and whether any ambiguity remains. If the match is not certain, ask what additional detail would resolve it.
  4. Record the confirmed pressing identity for your collection notes or buying decision.

Example Prompt

Try this with Claude using the Record Collector tool
Use record-collector to identify a pressing I found in a crate. The label says Columbia Records, the catalog number is PC 34987, and the matrix in the runout reads AL 34987-1A. The label has no barcode and the cover has no bar code sticker. Run identify_pressing, edition_match, and release_details. Tell me exactly which pressing this is and what makes you confident.

Tips

  • Matrix and runout text is the single most reliable identifier for pressings; always check the dead wax before anything else.
  • If the first pass returns multiple candidates, ask Claude which one detail would eliminate the remaining ambiguity.
  • Take photos of the label, runout, and spine before you start so you can reference them during the conversation.
