ChatGPT fetches commodity prices and explains what the moves mean in terms a non-specialist can act on. It contextualises a spike in oil prices within supply dynamics, translates precious metals moves into portfolio implications, and presents the data as a structured briefing rather than a raw number dump.

Steps

Once connected (see setup above), use the Finance Data tool:

  1. Ask: "Give me current prices for the major energy and metals commodities"
  2. ChatGPT returns live prices with context on recent trends
  3. Ask: "Which commodities have moved the most this week and why?"

Example Prompt

Try this with ChatGPT using the Finance Data tool
Show me current prices for oil, gold, silver, and natural gas. Which has moved the most this week? Give me a one-paragraph briefing on the commodity market right now.

Tips

  • Ask for a commodity market briefing rather than raw numbers for a more actionable summary
  • Request comparisons against year-ago levels for strategic planning context
  • ChatGPT can flag when prices are at historical extremes relative to available data
