Claude fetches the full rate picture — Treasury yields, benchmark rates, Fed balance sheet — and synthesises it into a coherent view of the rate environment. It identifies curve inversions, explains what Fed balance sheet changes signal, and connects rate moves to asset class implications without requiring specialist knowledge on your end.

Steps

Once connected (see setup above), use the Finance Data tool:

  1. Ask Claude: "Show me the current Treasury yield curve from 2-year to 30-year"
  2. Claude returns yields with context on curve shape
  3. Ask: "Is the yield curve currently inverted? What does that signal?"
  4. Ask: "What is the current Fed funds rate and how has it changed this year?"

Example Prompt

Try this with Claude using the Finance Data tool
Give me the current Treasury yields across the full curve, the Fed funds rate, and a summary of recent Fed balance sheet changes. Is the curve inverted? What does the current rate picture suggest for fixed income?

Tips

  • Ask for the yield spread between 2-year and 10-year Treasuries specifically — it is the most-watched inversion indicator
  • Combine Treasury yields with the Fed balance sheet to understand quantitative tightening progress
  • Ask Claude to explain the implications for mortgage rates, corporate borrowing, or equity valuations
