Art Collection Search

Claude investigates artwork attribution and provenance through a structured research conversation. Search by artist, title, or period, drill into specific records for full provenance details, and ask Claude to contextualise the findings — what the exhibition history suggests, what provenance gaps exist, and what the next research step should be.

  1. Ask: "Use art-collection-search to find works by Vermeer in major museum collections"
  2. Claude returns matching artworks with collection, accession, and provenance data
  3. Ask: "Get full artwork details for the top result including exhibition history and provenance notes"
  4. Ask Claude to summarise the provenance and flag any gaps worth investigating further

Example Prompt

Try this with Claude using the Art Collection Search tool
Use art-collection-search to find works attributed to Caravaggio in European museum collections. Get full details for the top 3 results including provenance, exhibition history, and current location. Tell me which attributions appear most secure and which have provenance gaps.

Tips

  • Use artwork_details specifically for provenance research — it returns deeper historical data than a standard search
  • Ask Claude to flag any "gap periods" in provenance history — these are due diligence red flags for acquisition or loan
  • Cross-reference accession numbers with the originating museum's own portal for the most current record
